Security Guard

Ontario Security Guard Training Course

If you are looking at a career as a Security Guard in Ontario, you MUST complete the Ontario Ministry Community Safety and Correctional Services licensing process. This process includes meeting Ministry licensing requirements, completing a 40 hour course as well as the Ministry Community Safety and Correctional Services Private Security and Investigative Services Act examination. There are two options for completing the course. The first is in a classroom setting, where you attend for a week of material delivered by an instructor. The second, is an online format, such as the one provided by Securityguardtrainingontario.com. In either case, the material is the same and if you do not currently have Emergency First Aid certification you will have to complete this as well.

Completing Your Course Online

Completing the course online is, for most people, the easiest and most convenient way of meeting this Ministry requirement. The SGTO Online Instructor Led Private Security and Investigative Services Act course offers two main advantages over completing the course in class. Flexibility is the first and greatest benefit provided. With the Security Guard Training Ontario course, you can start at any time and progress at your own pace. There is no need to wait for a course to start. Registration, account creation and course access take less than two hours, and you will be able to use the course indefinitely. You can complete the course using any Internet-connected computer, laptop, or tablet device from anywhere that is convenient for you. Cost is the second advantage of SGTO's course, with SGTO currently offering its online course for $69.99. Online learning is not for everyone, so some individuals would do better completing the course in-class. Course materials are in English, and the facilitator's voice is also in English.

SGTO's Online Instructor Led Private Security and Investigative Services Act course is delivered using rich media and features a simple and easy to navigate user interface. You progress through the course at your own pace and have access to course instructors for any questions that you might have. Fully supported by knowledgeable law enforcement personnel, the course has been created for busy adults who do not have time to sit in a classroom for 40 hours. Updates to the course material are provided regularly with changes to legislation, case-law, and best practices.

SGTO's course is delivered in partnership with WPSL Security Solutions, who is the registered training provider. The course does not include Emergency First Aid, which must be completed if you are not currently certified.

The SGTO course covers all of the material required by the Ministry of  Community Safety and Correctional Services except First Aid, and includes the following topic areas:

Emergency First Aid Requirements

First Aid Training

A currently valid emergency First Aid certificate is a requirement for completing your 40 Hour course. If you do not have a valid Emergency First Aid certificate you will have to obtain one. In the case of in-class courses, Emergency First Aid will be included in the 40 hour program. When completing the 40 Hour course in an online format, Emergency First Aid is generally not included as these types of courses require the student to attend a class. There are a number of organizations providing accredited Emergency First Aid training (a link to providers can be found on our FAQ page). A Google search will provide a number of organizations in your area that can provide the training at a time that is convenient for you. Whichever organization you choose, the training they deliver must be a minimum of 6.5 hours in length (Emergency First Aid CPR/AED Level "A") and be delivered by either  a St. John's Ambulance certified instructor, or a Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) (Ontario) approved first aid trainer. The average cost for this training is $110.00.
